Shaping the Museum was commissioned by Children's Museum London to gather together a wealth of architectural and exhibition content ideas generated over three years of creative pop-ups and workshops, and take them forward into the development of their permanent central London museum.

Working alongside Dr Vicky Cave we gathered, processed and drew-out 'design learning' from over 161 workshops with over 1600 people, many of which we had been involved with as artists and designers. The document organises this learning over three categories of People, Play and Place and translates it into a 'language' of 39 'patterns' ranging from 'Spaces which continuously evolve' to 'Reaching out to teachers', and from 'Choice of routes and exits' to 'Zoomorphism in the building'.

Presented in this clear, logical and engaging format, the document acts as an important record and a research tool. It forms a vital link between the arts-based satellite work that the Institute initially commissioned, and its much grander future architectural project. By gathering and re-framing the learning it captures the intuitive knowledge and invaluable energy of the end user, and retains it as an  accessible resource tailored to the professionals who will use it later in the project.
